#5 Cake Cutting

Topic Progress:

The cake cutting is generally held after the toasts, but may sometimes be done before the meal.  Some venues prefer to do the cake cutting before the meal to ensure their staff has enough time to cut the cake and have it ready to be served once dinner is done.

You may make a simple announcement for the cake cutting, and can play a special song, OR we strongly recommend practicing and using the cake cutting ceremony script found in the Scripts & Structures section.

Cake Cutting Ceremony Script

“It is time for the cake cutting ceremony. As ______ and _____ make their way over to the lovely cake, by a show of hands,  how many people in this room know the history and tradition for having cake at a wedding reception? Nobody? Let me share that with you now.

Wheat, that is in flower and in cake, is itself considered to be a symbol of good luck. And when this all started, back in the early roman times, wheat was often reserved for the wealthy.  So it was seen as a sign of wealth and abundance for a couple to have a sweet wheat bun at their wedding.

Back then, they would take that bun, and crumble it over the bridal couple’s head, and you all would have gotten a crumb off the ground, meaning you could share in their good fortune.

Now _______ & _______ have been kind enough to bring cake enough for everyone, so you don’t have to settle for crumbs today… and I’ve promised not to crumble anything over _______’s head.

Here comes the ceremony part, as they complete their final set of vows for the day. His  hand, over hers on the knife, is a vow for them to take care of their family, together.

And as they make that first slice, working out a piece to feed each other, not only is this their first action as a married couple, but it is a vow for them to make decisions together, and follow through on them, from now on.

And finally, as they feed each other a piece, this is a vow to nourish each other, mind, body, and soul for all time. Isn’t that a sweet tradition in every sense? Let’s give them a big hand!”
