#4 Speeches & Toasts

Topic Progress:

The toasts are generally the next opportunity for you to strut your stuff.  A formal introduction of each speaker is a classy way to retain control of this event.  It is generally performed when the head table has finished
eating.  Consult with the Bride and Groom to make sure they and the people giving the toasts are ready.  The general order of speakers is (the best man, Maid of honor, any other groomsmen, any other bridesmaids, father of the groom, and no matter what, last word goes to the father of the bride.)  Some families will not do all of these or wish to not follow tradition, that is their choice, but be prepared with names and relations to the couple for introductions.

Anatomy of a Toast Introduction

  1. Attention Statement
  2. Inform Audience – What’s Happening
  3. Inform Audience – Build Up Expectation
  4. Guide & Direct Audience – What You Want Them To Do
  5. Present Speaker Using Title

By keeping the 5 parts of a Toast Introduction in mind, you will be able to expertly and adeptly be able to Introduce ANYONE without the need of a script.  But to get you started, here is a basic script that follows the 5 steps.

“Wasn’t that a great meal served to us by ________________ catering staff?  Let’s give them a big hand! [pause for applause]  It is time for the Toasts, first we will be hearing from the Best Man.  Please welcome, Mr. __________ _____________!”

“Thank you ____________.  Next, our Maid of Honor will be giving a few words.   Please put your hands together for our Maid of Honor, Ms. ___________ ______________!”
